What to be thankful for about the Bears and what to wish for

November 26th, 2009 | by BearsSTH |

The Bears are 4-6 and have not met the high expectations set out before them after trading for Cutler. Despite the disappointment, there are still things to be thankful for. With the gift giving season now here, there are also things to wish for as a Bears fan.

What I’m thankful for…

Jay Cutler – Does anyone regret the Bears trading Kyle Orton for him? I didn’t think so. The Bears have their franchise and now management needs to develop a long term plan to help him succeed.

Lance Briggs – With Brian Urlacher and Pisa Tinoisamoa out for the year, Briggs has the stage to himself. He comes out to play every game, leads the Bears in tackles and makes plays all over the field.

Charles Tillman – He is the most under-rated player on the Bears defense and in the NFL. He should hold a clinic on how to punch the ball out. He also does his best in covering the other team’s best wide receiver.

Johnny Knox and Devin Hester – Knox and Hester are far from finished products and complete wide receivers. Knox has shown big play ability and Hester has shown that he can be an NFL wide receiver.

What my wish list is…

The Bears make a serious run at the playoffs – All is not lost, even though they are 4-6 and they play the Vikings at the Metrodome. After this week, they still have to play the Vikings again, Packers, Lions, Rams, and Ravens. Can it be done? We sure hope so.

Give Cutler another weapon to throw to
– Brandon Marshall, Vincent Jackson, Steve Breaston, Lee Evans, and Hines Ward are the top unrestricted wide receiver free agents. With the collective bargaining agreement expiring in the spring, the free agent landscape is still uncertain. If the CBA holds up, next year’s wide receiver crop is the best it’s ever been.

Commit to building around Cutler – For the past century the Bears have built their teams around a running back. Over the past twenty years, the NFL has become a quarterback league. It sometimes seems like the Bears are trying to find their next Walter Payton or Gale Sayers.

Bears management to continue to be aggressive – No one thought the Bears were going to pull off the Cutler trade. I’m a Lovie Smith guy and would never wish anyone to lose his job, but if he isn’t relieved, the Bears need to find an offensive-minded mentor for Cutler to develop under.

This Sunday for the game against the Vikings, use the #4thPhase tag on Twitter and I’ll use your tweets in my blog.

Well I think the Bears are gonna find out Sunday vs Vikings exactly how far they are & what they need to do to compete with the elite in the NFL & their division. Cutler is still the best thing the Bears have done but they do need to protect him so they need o-line help. Let’s see to if they can pull off another good deal & get Brandon Marshall here he’s a maniac. Let’s not forget the d they need a serious pass rusher ala Jared Allen & a shut down corner to complement Tillma. They got their work cut out for them but they’ve also have alot of talented guys that just need to be coached up. Go Bears.
